About Us
Bihun Collective is a people’s archive committed to documenting food beyond the plate to show its connections with people’s livelihood, culture and ecological diversity. We achieve this through storytelling – narrating lived realities, native wisdom and challenges surrounding food, forest, people, farms and the biodiversity integral to them. An attempt to share food stories cannot be isolated from its historicity, politics and the intersections of caste, ethnicity, gender and issues of access. It is an attempt to understand and document people’s voices and their struggles to assert democratic control over their lives and livelihoods.
With the purpose to document and share the wealth of knowledge we aim to expand the reach of the content to a multilingual audience with different literacy levels. In order to make the stories more accessible this digital archive will contain stories in the form of photo essays, illustrative narratives, journals, documentaries and podcasts.
Through consistent innovative storytelling the portal aims to bring forth a repository of data that will allow critical analysis of the modernisation and homogenisation of production and consumption practices. It is also to tackle critical issues relating to expanding sustainable food distribution strategies that threatens the plurality and diversity of culture and practices of communities. Such a portal could also contribute towards shaping more regionally-informed policy making. Lastly serve as a pedagogical tool for teaching concepts supported by empirical evidence and a more contextual understanding.
